If a client knows just what she wants, I listen first.
If not, I like to begin with a new client by exploring other websites in the same category. If I'm designing a site for an artist, we look at artists' websites. If it is for an online store, we look at that type of site.
If the client can do his own research, I ask him to send me links to sites as well as his comments on what he likes and doesn't about each one.
Sometimes I sit with a client who can't find the time to do the research himself. Or I may do the searching myself and send links to him, requesting that he tell me his opinions.
Step Two:
Discovering the client's goals for her site. It might seem that this stage should come first and sometimes it does. However, many clients haven't thought this through and may even be intimidated by the prospect.
I always do this in an interview type setting, usually in person.
Here are some questions I ask:
What are your goals for this site? Making money? Providing information? Showcasing your accomplishments?
Who will be the people who will visit your site? Are they looking for information, shopping for products, or learning about you as a potential service provider?
Step Three
At this point I usually have enough information to start designing. If I have gotten some preferences from the client on what he likes, I start with that.
